Breastfeeding Calorie Calculator

Quick answer

Estimate how many extra calories you need each day while breastfeeding. We start from your usual maintenance calories (Mifflin-St Jeor BMR × activity level) and add the lactation allowance for exclusive or partial breastfeeding.

How daily needs are calculated

BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor, female) = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

TDEE = BMR × activity factor (1.2 sedentary → 1.9 very active)

Total = TDEE + lactation addition: +500 kcal (exclusive) · +250 kcal (partial)

The +500 kcal figure is the commonly used standard within the IOM / DGA lactation range of about +450–500 kcal/day. Actual needs vary with supply, your baby’s age and your weight goals.

Worked example

  1. 1

    A 30-year-old breastfeeding mother, 165 cm and 62 kg.

  2. 2

    BMR = 10 × 62 + 6.25 × 165 − 5 × 30 − 161 ≈ 1340 kcal/day.

  3. 3

    Lightly active (×1.375): TDEE ≈ 1843 kcal/day.

  4. 4

    Exclusively breastfeeding: ≈ 1843 + 500 ≈ 2343 kcal/day.

How lactation changes your needs

Your resultCategoryWhat it means
Exclusive breastfeeding+450 to +500 kcal/dayProducing a full milk supply is energy-intensive. IOM / DGA guidance centres on roughly +450–500 kcal/day (we use 500) on top of your usual needs.
Partial breastfeeding+250 kcal/dayMixed feeding — some breastmilk with formula or solids — needs about half the extra energy of exclusive feeding.
Over timeNeeds ease offEarly months and frequent feeds raise needs; the number dips as solids are introduced and feeds become fewer.

Lactation add-ons sit on top of your usual TDEE. Needs also shift with your baby’s age, milk supply and how active you are.
