The math
Pace (min/km) = total minutes ÷ distance (km)
Speed (km/h) = distance ÷ (minutes ÷ 60)
Pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609
Works for running, walking, cycling and swimming — any distance-based activity.
Worked example
- 1
You ran 10 km in 52 minutes.
- 2
Pace: 52 ÷ 10 = 5.2 min/km = 5:12 per km.
- 3
Speed: 10 ÷ (52/60) = 11.5 km/h.
- 4
Per mile: 5.2 × 1.609 ≈ 8:22 per mile.
Interpreting your pace
| Your result | Category | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5:00 /km | Race pace | Fast, hard effort — typical 5K to 10K race-day intensity. |
| 5:00 – 6:30 /km | Tempo / threshold | Comfortably hard running that builds speed and stamina. |
| 6:30 – 8:00 /km | Easy / aerobic | Conversational pace for most runners; most weekly volume should sit here. |
| Slower than 8:00 /km | Recovery / walking | Good for recovery days, hikes and general daily movement. |
Example bands for typical recreational runners — adapt to your own level.
