The waist-to-height formula

WHtR = waist circumference ÷ height

Both measurements must use the same unit (cm or inches)

The goal: a ratio under 0.5 — waist less than half your height

NICE thresholds: under 0.5 healthy, 0.5–0.59 increased risk, 0.6+ high risk. The guidance applies to adults with a BMI under 35 kg/m².

Worked example

  1. 1

    A woman is 165 cm tall with a waist of 74 cm.

  2. 2

    WHtR = 74 ÷ 165 = 0.45.

  3. 3

    Below 0.5 → her waist is less than half her height, so she sits in the healthy range.
